The department of Information Science and Telecommunication (IST) was officially inaugurated in the year 2003 as a department of this nine decades old great educational institution (erstwhile known as Gangadhar Meher Au onomous College, Sambalpur) by the than education minister of Odisha Mr Bimbadhar Kuanr, in the presence of th e than principal of the college Professor(Dr) Ramnarayan Mishra. The basic objective of opening of this depar tment was to provide 3 years duration bachelor degree level technical/professional education related to Informat ion Science, Electronics & Communication and allied technologies in a reasonable and affordable course fee, to the deprived students of Odisha, those who can’t afford costly professional courses like BE/BTech/BCA etc after completion of their 12th class/+2 in science. The department started functioning in the same year 2003 itself w ith an undergraduate self-financing degree program namely BSc-IST(Information Science and Telecommunication) , w ith intake capacity of 32. The department started functioning under the mentorship of the well-established physic s department and with the banner of Professional Courses. Since its inception it is growing continuously to provi de quality professional education in the field of Information Sciences, Electronics and Communication Technologies.

In the year 2015 the college (the than G.M. autonomous collage) upgraded to a unitary university. With the upgraded structure of the university, the BSc(IST) program continued its journey under the banner of School of Information Science & Telecommunication(IST). In the year 2018 the student intake capacity of the BSc(IST) program is incremented to 48, due to it’s growing popularity and demand. In the same year, a post graduate program MSc-ETC (Electronics & Telecommunication) also added to this school.

During the journey of 21 years, the school has produced 18 batches of successful under graduates and 04 batches of postgraduates. It has earned the glory to produce much efficient man power for IT and Telecommunication industry. Now it is attracting students from different parts of Odisha and many of its alumni are working in different national and international reputed IT companies, although many of them are working in banking sector and government offices in different capacities as well. Some of the alumni of this school are also working abroad.

Vision:

To impart high quality technological and professional education in the field of information sciences, electronics and communication technologies with effort to instill the necessary skills to convert the ideas of young minds to innovation , develop communication skills, entrepreneurial skills, strong human values and problem solving abilities to face the contemporary world with solution for it’s crisis or problems.

Mission:

To emerge as a centre of excellence in providing in-depth knowledge of practical, theories, research and innovation skills in the field of information sciences, electronics and communication technologies so that the graduates will be efficient enough to implement in solving real life problems.
To be recognized as a skill development centre, to upgrade the necessary skills of the learners like, communication skills, analytical and critical thinking and ability of decision making in addition to the core skills of ICT domain.
To gain reputation as a centre of professional studies and guidance in preparing it’s students to face the challenges in future in employment, entrepreneurship or in higher studies , with ethics and human values.
