SCHOOL OF HINDI Gangadhar Meher University, Amrit Vihar, Sambalpur established on 7th July 1944, the prestigious Sambalpur College, presently Gangadhar Meher University, has become the identity of not only Western Odisha but also the state of Odisha at the Indian level. 1944 is the time in Indian politics when the national movement to free India from British slavery was in full swing. The language of the national movement was Hindi because at that time Hindi was the only language which every citizen of India could speak and understand well. The government of a non-Hindi speaking state like Odisha understood the importance of Hindi and Hindi language was recognized in Sambalpur College as a MIL language. Also in 1974, Honours course was started with 16 seats. Students also got the opportunity to study as a respected/disciplined language. 

In 1992, this college got 'autonomous' recognition from the government. There is a seminar library in this department which has 565 books which are given to the students from time to time as per need for enhancing their knowledge and departmental seminars are organized every year. 

In 2019, M.A., M.Phil and PhD courses were also opened in this department, which benefited the entire students, especially those students who are not financially capable of going out and continuing their further studies. There are 30 seats in PG & 32 seats in UG. 1 researchers are doing research for PhD. Students from Odisha, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand bordering Odisha are also studying in this department. 

This department has (1)one departmental room and (3) three big rooms in which undergraduate and postgraduate students study. Very modern and relevant subjects like women's discourse, tribal discourse, Dalit discourse and cinema, screenplay and dialogue writing, journalism and purpose-oriented Hindi and translation have also been included in the curriculum so that students can achieve success in every examination held at the Indian level. Classes are held regularly here. Additional classes are also taken to complete the curriculum as needed. Students are also taught the importance of cleanliness, moral education and that an ideal student should contribute to the development of society and nation from time to time.

In this department Teachers like Shri KP Gupta, Dr. Usha Parida, Dr. Prabhat Kumar Tripathi, Dr. Kuljeet Singh, Dr. Balram Das, Dr. Arjun Satpathy, Dr. Murarilal Shaman, Dr. Ghulam Moinuddin Khan, Dr. Kuna Panda, Raghuraj Singh, Dr. Rajkumari Ganju, Dr. Vimla Patra, Dr. Jyoti Mishra, Dr. Sadan Kumar Paul provided their services and contributed significantly in the development of this department and in the propagation of Hindi. Presently Dr. Dasharathi Behera, Dr. Pranati Behera, Dr. Smruti Smaranika Jena, & Ms. Mamata Nayak serve in school of Hindi as a Guest Faculty. To smoothly run the department, four guest teachers have also been appointed who contribute fully to the departmental work.
