About School

The Department of English was established in the year 1949. Since its inception, the department has been peopled by several distinguished faculty members and it has grown in terms of the student enrolment and courses offered. Over the years its output has included distinguished alumni, research journal of the department, publications in scholarly journals by faculties and scholars, contributions to co-curricular activities, among others. Presently, it offers UG (Honours), PG and PhD programs in English.


The School of English, as it is named presently, consists of three regular faculty members and four guest faculties, who are highly qualified. Around three hundred students are pursuing Ph.D., P.G. and U.G. programs. A well-equipped seminar library with internet facility caters to the academic needs of the students. Besides, the department conducts special classes on NET, GATE, soft skills and personality development to enhance the employability of the students. The students are disciplined, diligent and eager for knowledge. The School publishes an annual journal Meher Journal of English Studies (ISSN: 0975-8518). It regularly invites renowned academics and organises seminars, extramural lectures. It also organises Annual Memorial Lectures in honour of Prof. Shrimat Sahu and Prof. Prafulla Pati. The literary club and debating society of the department frequently conduct activities like poetry recitation, creative writing, elocution, debates, drama, etc. for the holistic development of the students. Students excel in extracurricular activities at district and state levels by demonstrating exceptional talent, creativity, and teamwork, which enriches their overall educational experience and personal growth.

To be a leading institution of English Studies in India and thus be instrumental in advancing knowledge in the Humanities by promoting high academic standard in teaching and research involving inclusivity, gender equity, choice and interdisciplinarity and provide the students a globally competent environment for academic pursuit.
